Before he started rolling with Stealers Wheel, Rafferty was a member of fellow Scot Billy Connolly's folk jam band the Humblebums.
Rafferty's biggest solo hits, including "Baker Street" (it doesn't take long to identify that famous sax solo) and "Get It Right Next Time," came after he and Stealers Wheel parted ways in 1975.
Though the Glasgow native continued to write music and perform over the years and his final album was
2000's Another World. His battle with alcoholism began to make more headlines than his music, however, and he was treated for liver disease in 2008.
His daughter, Martha, was by his side when he died.
