Dabangg - Movie of the year 2010
Dabangg One reason why Dabangg was made at a reasonable cost is that there’s nothing big in the movie except for Salman Khan. According to Sanjay Ghai of Mukta Films Ltd, “The director and heroine were both new. The film didn’t boast of extravagant sets or exclusive outdoors, so the production cost was automatically in control, at ` 32 crore minus Salman’s fee. In terms of volume, it returned about 300 per cent.”
Question them about Ekta Kapoor’s relatively economical Love Sex Aur Dhoka directed by Dibakar Bannerjee, which cost about ` 4 crore and grossed over ` 10 crore, and Mumbai distributor Ramesh Sippy says, “Although LSD had a turnover much in excess of its cost, it’s not an all-India hit nor will it go down memory lane. It is a commendable effort that paid off very well, but the fact remains that Dabangg worked all across.”
In the same vein, Suneil Wadhwa, a major distributor from CP (north India) territory, adds that universal appeal makes Dabangg the numero uno movie of 2010. “It worked equally well in single screens and multiplexes, in all centres from big metros to small towns, and struck a chord with the audience. Every distributor and exhibitor made money,” he explains.
The trade market shares a similar stance on Golmaal 3 being the second biggest hit of the year. “Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor were the biggest actors and it maintained a good risk-reward ratio. Being a Diwali release, it not only opened very well, but also went on to do good business in the third and fourth weeks, crossing over `100 crore,” says Delhi-based distributor Sanjay Mehta. Interestingly, Golmaal 3 scored over Dabangg in the Mumbai territory.
While a section of the trade put Prakash Jha’s political drama Raajneeti at number three, trade analyst Amod Mehra feels I Hate Love Storys, too, makes the grade. “Costing about `25 crore, it returned about `45 crore, which is very good,” he says, adding that Sajid Khan’s Housefull comes next, making the top five.
Apart from these, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai and Peepli Live too make it to the hit category while Ishqiya and Tere Bin Laden are said to have done average business. Sanjay Ghai says Shankar’s Robot (Hindi) too did well earning `30 crore, while the figures of the Tamil original aren’t being disclosed by Sun, which produced and distributed the Rajnikanth-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan sci-fi extravaganza. Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol did very well internationally, but according to Ashish Saxena, CEO, Big Cinemas, “It didn’t make money for Fox Star, which distributed the film worldwide.”
Asin work with Shahrukh Khan in next
After working with Aamir in Ghajini and Salman in London Dreams , Asin might end up being one of the few heroines to have worked with all the three Khans. The role of a Tamil girl suits Asin to the tee and she has always professed eagerness to work with SRK. Asin has her fingers crossed as she waits to sign on the dotted line.
Anushka Sharma I don't unite any ruffles around me
"I am sure things will fall in place sooner or later," smiles Anushka who would next be seen in 'Patiala House' opposite Akshay Kumar, "If your work is not good and you are known only for your public appearances, your market value will eventually die it's natural death. This is the reason why I don't add any frills around me."She is hopeful though that things would change for better in due course of time.
"I would get the kind of respect and appreciation that I deserve in the industry. Let my body of work reach out to people," she says with her chin up, "I have immense confidence in myself. Eventually I think that if your work is good then people will sit up and notice that. There would be a wow factor that come in by itself."Well, one hopes so for sure Anushka with 'Patiala House' all set to hit the screens on 11th February.
Akshay Kumar in 'Patiala House'
The Story: ‘Patiala House’ is about the Kahlon family ruled by an autocratic and stubborn patriarch Bauji (Rishi Kapoor) the members of this household have no other choice but to adhere to his ways, his whims, his rules…
Scarred by a racial incident that took place 20 years ago – an incident that led to the murder of his mentor and guardian, the senior advocate leader Mr. Saini, Bauji began hating the British and everything that the country and its people stood for.
Akshay Kumar (Parghat Singh Kahlon) plays a Sikh, an England Citizen who is talented and has always dreamt to be a Pace bowler. His parents have migrated years back to London. The movie is a conflict between the father and son. It’s about a patriarchal family that has to bow down to the wishes and dictates of the head patriarch.
The Arrival: Directed by Nikhil Advani and starring Akshay Kumar, Anushka Sharma, Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia, ‘Patiala House’ is slated to release on 11th Feb 2011.
Sonakshi Sinha & Salman Khan act together in 'jinx'
To begin with, Sonakshi starts shooting for Shirish Kunder's 3D extravaganza Joker with Akshay Kumar in January. This will be followed by the multi- starrer Race 2 , for which directors Abbas- Mustan have preferred her to Kareena Kapoor, despite the film's hero Saif Ali Khan reportedly insisting that his girlfriend be cast in the film. Up next will be Kick, an action- comedy costarring Salman, and Prabhu Deva's upcoming Akshay Kumar- starrer.
Rumours are also doing the rounds that Sonakshi could be one of the heroines in Sajid Khan's Housefull 2. Kunal Kohli wants to cast her in his next film starring Shahid Kapoor. Anurag Basu is also considering Sonakshi for his upcoming film, Barfee , starring Ranbir Kapoor.
It's not every day in Bollywood that an actress who is just one- film- old is flooded with so many offers from top banners. " Her confidence sets her apart. Everyone has noted the fact that although Dabangg was her first film and she was paired with a superstar of Salman Khan's stature, she showed no signs of nervousness. She has no camera fright," said Dabangg director Abhinav Kashyap.
" Being a star's daughter definitely gave her a headstart compared to other newcomers. It means she was considered for high- profile projects and got more leeway. It remains to be seen how she cashes in on the advantage. However, if producers are willing to shell out over a crore for the onefilm- old Sonakshi, that says a lot," an industry insider said. Salman is known to promote new talent. However, every newcomer who has made her debut opposite the superstar has somehow never managed to survive in Bollywood.
Turn back the clock, and you realise that Bhagyashree, despite her blockbuster debut in Maine Pyar Kiya , never quite succeeded in chalking out a career in Bollywood. After the Sooraj Barjatya superhit and her now- defunct marriage to flop actor Himalaya, Bhagyashree tried several comebacks in films as well as on TV but none have had any impact.
Similarly, Naghma, Salman's debutant co- star in Baaghi failed to make an impact in Bollywood. Subsequently, she did small roles in films such as Yalgaar and King Uncle before becoming a superstar in Tamil cinema.
Industry experts feel the pattern is a result of the fact that Salman's films hardly ever leave any scope for his actresses, especially newcomers. That's likely what happened to Chandni as well. In 1991, Salman starred opposite debutant Chandni in Sanam Bewafa . The Saawan Kumar- directed film, despite being a superhit, didn't help Chandni's career and she slipped into oblivion.
" In his ( Salman's) films, girls mostly don't get strong roles. They only have to dance and look pretty," said filmmaker Jag Mundhra. Sonakshi seems to have broken the jinx that the likes of Bhagyashree, Naghma and Chandni couldn't.
Katrina Kaif gazes once again toward the year with affection, and looks forward to 2011 with vigour
” Says the visibly-excited actor, “Starting with Raajneeti, the response to which was most unexpected, working with Farah Khan on Tees Maar Khan, going into a different space with Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara and then stepping into an extremely fun territory with Yash Raj Films’ Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, it was all very challenging.”
Though work-wise it was an extremely satisfying year, on the personal front it was a bit unfulfilling as she did not get time to holiday with her family like she does every year. “But I am not complaining.
Sometimes it happens, and one just has to be flexible. But now I am hoping that my sister can make it for New Year to Delhi where I am shooting for Mere Brother Ki Dulhan,” she chirps happily.
Vidya Balan to waiting home on birthday
A source close to Vidya says, "She's been in and out of Mumbai for the last six months. Earlier she was shooting for Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani for almost two months. After that she got into the promotion of Jessica travelling to almost every major city. Her busy schedule hasn't given her any chance to spend time with her parents.
Since her birthday and New Year fall on the same day, Vidya has a double reason to celebrate. Despite buying a new apartment in Khar, the actress wasn't able to renovate the place or spend time in it. Her New Year resolution is to buy some antique furniture and do up her place.
Every year, Vidya prefers to keep her birthday a low-key affair. Rather than go out with friends, she enjoys spending quality time with her parents. "This year will be no different. She will bring in her birthday and the new year at her parents' house. Since she doesn't believe in cutting a cake, her mom plans to prepare a sweet dish on the occasion," a source said. After the release of No One Killed Jessica, Vidya plans to start preparing for her next film Balaji's Dirty Picture based on the life of Silk Smitha.
Rani Mukherjee is enduring comparable tight spot
Rani is among those few actors, who observed a breakdown at the peak of her career and almost disappeared. Her last few films like DIL BOLE HADIPPA, THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC, LAAGA CHUNRI MEIN DAAG, TA RA RUM PUM, and BAABUL were huge debacles wherein Rani received lot of flak from audiences & critics alike.
She tried her best to restore her declining career. For that, she even shed her weight and toned her body to look glamourous in the last film DIL BOLE HADDIPA probably to match steps with the contemporaries. But all in vain!
Looks like, Rani is in no mood to take anymore chances for her career. She is absolutely serious and obstinate about her forthcoming ventures & doings. She is all determined to rise like a phoenix. For her upcoming release NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, Rani is leaving no stones unturned to grab (literally) eyeballs.
Looking at the kind of aggressive promotions Rani is carrying out for the film it only proves she can go any extent (good for the film, atleast). As they say any publicity is good publicity, Rani is also making most of the proverb. Firstly, the audacious lady Rani Mukherjee, who seemingly plays a bold character in the movie, has effortlessly mouthed a lot of cuss words and bold dialogues, and generated enough curiosity among viewers. And the producers are banking on it too.
If that was not enough to draw the attention, the fiery actress gave a new high to film promotion and came up with some hatke publicity gimmicks, raising many an eyebrows. From pushing Vidya with her desi thumka to lip-locking with her in public or matching steps with Madhuri and laying down flat on the ground in front of her and doing a full namaskar or making bold statements in media, Rani is doing it all in a bid to gain maximum spotlight for the film (or rather for herself).
It seems this time the bong babe is hell-bent on achieving success! Well even we wish the same for the indomitable actress and wish her all the luck for her upcoming release NO ONE KILLED JESSICA.
Amitabh Bachchan & Aamir Khan act together in Delhi Belly
Earlier in 2001, Mr. Bachchan did voice over for Aamir Khan’s debut production Lagaan. Now, after almost a decade, Big B has again turned narrator for Aamir’s project Delhi Belly, whose first trailer will have the megastar’s voice in the background. The first trailers of the film will be released with Aamir Khan’s wife Kiran Rao’s directorial debut Dhobi Ghat, which is releasing on January 21.
A statement from Delhi Belly’s publicist indicates that Aamir and Kiran had a two hours close door meeting with Big B a couple of days back. They visited the megastar on the sets and convinced for the dubbing. Finally on Wednesday morning, Big B dubbed for Delhi Belly in a suburban studio.
The interesting part is that Aamir has penned down the introductory piece that has been narrated by Amitabh Bachchan. An elated Aamir could not stop praising Big B on his Facebook page and said that Big B has been most generous to him once again. Delhi Belly will star Aamir’s nephew Imran Khan, comedian Vir Das and Kunal Roy Kapur and debutant Abhinay Deo has directed it.
SRK gives Ra.One main role to Arjun Rampal
It is reported that Shahrukh plays double role in the movie, one of which is a scientist who creates two robots – the good one named G.One and the bad one named Ra.One.Shahrukh plays G.One and Arjun plays Ra.One.
Director Anubhav Sinha disclosed that Shahrukh plays the part of G.One but rejected to disclose further.Shahrukh produces the film besides playing the lead role along with Arjun Rampal and Kareena Kapoor.
Vidya Balan celebrates her 33rd birthday today
Apparently, Vidya has double reason to cheer as her birthday coincides with New Year. Though the actress likes to celebrate her big day in modest way, the source added, “This year will be no various. She will bring in her birthday and the New Year at her parents` house.Since she doesn`t believe in cutting a cake, her mom plans to prepare a sweet dish on the event.”
Sameer Soni apart from Bigg Boss 4!
Kareena Kapoor is wanted in Hollywood
Smart girl, we say, I mean look what happened to Ash, none of her international flicks worked at the box office. But obviously that has not stopped some big name agents and companies that represent A-list Hollywood celebrities from wanting to sign her. What key names you ask. No idea dearies, nobody is telling me.But of course Kareena couldn’t be bothered with all the attention as she believes she gets enough of it back home.
So the temperamental actress is busy evading these agents and disappearing on shopping trips with friends as soon as she hears ‘pack up’ on the sets rather than being hounded by Hollywood agents. This girl sure has her concerns right.
Lawful notice on SRK over ad
“The advertisement shows Khan with kids painting walls, which falls under the category of hazardous work. Such kind of work has been illegal by law,” the noticed said.“Since the advertisement is being telecast through wide range of households, Nerolac Paints and Shah Rukh Khan are promoting child labour through this ad,” Charan claimed.
“Shah Rukh Khan is an established actor and has an big fan following. Thus, there are most likely of an increase in child labour following the advertisement. It is therefore necessary to instantly suspend the advertisement,” he said.
